The last evening bus linking Kelverton to the moor-road villages of Netherton and Highcombe could be withdrawn from the spring timetable, under proposals now out for consultation.
The operator says the evening run carries too few passengers to justify the subsidy. Residents counter that the service is a lifeline precisely because it is thin: those who rely on it have no alternative once the last bus has gone.
Who would be affected
- Shift workers travelling home to the villages after 7pm.
- Older residents who gave up driving and depend on the route for appointments.
- Sixth-formers travelling back from evening classes in town.
The district authority has asked for responses by the end of the month and says no decision has been taken. Campaigners are urging villagers to write in, arguing that a service used by few is not the same as a service needed by few.
The Review will publish details of the consultation, including how to respond, alongside this report.
